I loved this book! I have read many WWII novels and this is definitely one of the best. Using a dual timeline we learn that Lia Leclaire has inherited a Paris apartment full of treasures that she knew nothing about from her grandmother Estelle Allard. She employs Gabriel Seymour to appraise the art found within. The two soon learn that Gabriel's great aunt Sophie Seymour had a connection to the apartment too. The story starts out a bit slowly as the two timelines and four main characters are established. From there the story takes off and keeps you enthralled until the final page. It reads more like a thriller as the secrets of the apartment are slowly unraveled. The author's beautiful writing strikes just the right balance of communicating the horrors of Nazi occupied Paris without being too graphic. With a dual timeline the author has the challenge of making both storylines interesting. There's a small bit about Gabriel's reluctance to show and possibly sell his own art. I suppose she added that to give the present day story more drama. But to me it feels forced and totally unnecessary. The story of Estelle and Sophie's struggles to survive Nazi occupied Paris was always going to be far more dramatic than any present day story. But that is a small drawback to this wonderful book. I have read all of Bowen's book and loved or really liked each one. I normally do not like books set within two time frames but WOW, I could not put this one down. All of the emotions; joy, love, tragedy, sorrow, fear, happiness; when two individuals of today are confronted with a hidden past of nationalism and racism. a terrific author. Can't wait for the next one.
